A Recognised Qualification for ADIs
The Diploma for Teaching the Introduction to Driving Education Award provides comprehensive, structured training to Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs), equipping them with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to teach Potential Driving Instructors (PDIs). This is a Train the Trainer programme that also awards a nationally recognised qualification.
ADIs who complete this Diploma will be able to deliver the Introduction to Driving Education Award, so their PDIs also work towards a recognised qualification — whilst adhering to DVSA standards for road safety and driver training.
Development of both qualifications took seven months, incorporating feedback from industry experts, respected academics, and meetings with department heads from the DVSA. The result: a comprehensive training package giving participants unmatched insights into road safety, technology, and becoming the very best driving educator possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The qualification completed the quality assurance process with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in April 2025. It is an SCQF Level 8 qualification — equivalent difficulty to second-year study at university.
There are 13 units in total. We recommend completing all 13 within a two-year period. The average student will spend approximately 170 hours in total (including attending modules, research, study and assignments). Units are spaced over several months; you have six months to complete the assignments for each unit and two years to complete all 13 units.
Assessment uses a variety of methods. In-car units include practical tasks, observations and Q&A sessions. Online units may use automatically marked quizzes, reflective practical tasks, or written/audio/video submissions. Virtual sessions may require you to lead a group discussion or training session. Assignments are designed to consolidate knowledge and develop delivery skills — not to judge academic writing ability.
Yes. ADIs who complete the Diploma will be qualified to deliver the Introduction to Driving Education Award to PDIs, enabling those PDIs to also work toward a recognised qualification. Qualified trainers will have their own trainer page on the IDEA platform, and are encouraged to actively promote this as a core part of their business.
PDIs (and ADIs) book the qualification element through IDEA, but arrange dates, locations and trainer fees with you directly. The Introduction to Driving Education Award is sold on a unit-by-unit, pay-as-you-go basis to help PDIs spread the cost. In-car training days are designed for a maximum of two PDIs at a time, and trainers set their own fees.
